Meet our Youth Minister Gracie Bates-Davis

Hello United Church of Hyde Park! I am thrilled to be your new youth minister as of late October 2006. As someone who is new to the staff of UCHP I would like you to know a bit about me. For starters, I am originally from Smithville, Texas which is a small country town. I went to Texas State University (formerly known as Southwest Texas State University) in San Marcos which is located in the hill country of Texas. I double majored in Political Science and Philosophy. I have a Master of Arts degree in Theology and am currently pursuing a Master of Divinity degree at Chicago Theological Seminary. In October of 2006 I married my best friend David and we enjoy living here in Hyde Park!

I am excited to work with the youth and all has been blessed thus far. The youth ministry is blessed beyond measure to have your support and ideas. Please feel free to contact me with ideas, joys, blessings, and eagerness to volunteer to further enhance the youth program. My e-mail address is as follows:
gracie.bates@gmail.com

Thank you UCHP for this opportunity!

Global Warming

Global warming is irrevocably destroying the world’s environment. Not only is it threatening the survival of numerous plant and animal species, it is also resulting in severe flooding, storms, and drought. The US leads the world in contributing to global warming through carbon emissions. Sure, it can be expensive to change our ways, but the side-effects of global warming seem too disastrous (economically as well as environmentally) to ignore.

Do you believe we have a moral obligation as Christians to do something about it?

For the next few months, the church would like to consider what we as a congregation might do. Can we recycle? Use reusable plates and glasses? Buy only recycled products? Educate our congregation? Write letters to politicians and church organizations?

Please join us in this conversation in the fellowship hall, your committee, the church website (we are hoping to start a blog!), the January Monthly Gathering, and our Lenten dinners.

What is God calling this church to be and do?

That is the question for us in 2007. The Church Council in recent months has acknowledged that our church has some issues we need to work on. Since the members of the Council are already working hard just to keep our programs running, I invited some other gifted and talented members to begin working on a plan for how our whole congregation can be involved in considering the question. In worship on New Year's Eve I announced what we were doing and invited others to join. The next meetings of this team will be on Tuesday January 23rd and Tuesday February 6th, both at 6:30 pm in the Hashimoto Library. We are working with Ray Schulte from the Center for Parish Development. If you are interested in joining this team or have other questions please talk to one of the members of the team, June Porter, Janice Kates, Rachet Hall or me, the Rev. Larry Turpin.
